On April 17, 2014, San Diego’s Pacifica Institute was honored to host the United States Attorney for the Southern District of California, Laura Duffy. Ms. Duffy’s most notable cases during her time as a U.S. Attorney involved prosecutions against members of the Arellano Felix Organization, a drug trafficking cartel believed to be responsible for importing tons of cocaine and marijuana to the United States and hundreds of deaths.
The evening began with a reception and dinner at 6:30pm, followed by a presentation by Laura Duffy on “The Importance of the Strong Bond between Law Enforcement and the Community.” Her speech was focused on the description of intercultural dialogue meetings her staff holds with members of the Somalian Community in San Diego. So also spoke on the importance of the fight against perscription drug abuse amongst teenagers and young adults, touching on some powerful and moving anecdotes. The evening ended with a question and answer session in which Ms. Duffy answered questions posed by the guests.
