Speaker Bio:
Madison Nguyen was elected to the San Jose City Council in 2005, the first Vietnamese American to serve on the city council of any major metropolitan city in the United States. On January 25, 2011, Nguyen was appointed by the Mayor and City Council to serve as San Jose’s first Vietnamese American Vice Mayor.

Over the past five years, Vice Mayor Nguyen has made significant progress on some of the most pressing issues that affect the city including affordable housing, economic development, public safety, and transportation. She strives to make the City of San Jose a safe and healthy place to live, work, and play.

Vice Mayor Nguyen currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Public Safety, Finance and Strategic Support Committee; Vice Chair of the Rules and Open Government Committee, Member of the Mayor’s Gang Prevention Task Force, San Jose/Santa Clara Water Treatment Plant Advisory Committee, Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Policy Advisory Board (BART), Housing and Community Development Advisory Committee as well as other key commissions and committees.

Born in Vietnam, Madison Nguyen and her family immigrated to the United States in the early 1980’s. She received her Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and her Masters Degree in Social Science from the University of Chicago.

In her capacity as Vice Mayor of San Jose, she is considered to be one of the highest ranking elected officials of Vietnamese background in the United States.
