On December 15th, Pacifica Institute youngsters joined LA Regional Foodbank, which has a network of over 1,000 charitable agencies, in their efforts to relieve the growing demand for food throughout LA County. According to recent statistics, more than 1.7 million LA residents are food insecure, which is more than any other county in the States.
Well aware of this alarming fact in its neighborhood and to fulfill its social responsibilities, Pacifica Institute LA mobilized its volunteers to give a hand to the hungry through Regional Foodbank. In the early Saturday morning, Pacifica team arrived at the facility located in Long Beach Avenue. Grouped with wide-ranging institutions including First Evangelical Church and Starbucks, our volunteers were assigned food sorting from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm following a brief orientation. Foods donated by various companies and individuals such as bread, canned products, pastries and vegetables were to be inspected for expiration and package conditions and sorted accordingly. The volunteers not only enjoyed the collaborative work but obtained a great deal of first-hand knowledge from the fruitful experience as well. Above all, they realized how many reasons we have to feel hopeful about the future witnessing how an individual contribution can evolve into a transformative action for the ones in need.
