{"id":2249,"date":"2013-03-05T22:32:14","date_gmt":"2013-03-06T06:32:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pacificasv.org\/?p=2249"},"modified":"2016-09-12T20:20:33","modified_gmt":"2016-09-13T03:20:33","slug":"pacifica-lectures-david-onek","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pacificainstitute.org\/bay-area\/2013\/03\/05\/pacifica-lectures-david-onek\/","title":{"rendered":"Pacifica Lectures: David Onek"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On March 7<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0, guests gathered in the\u00a0<i>Burlingame Pacifica Institute<\/i>\u00a0to hear David Onek,\u00a0Adjunct Professor at UC Hastings Law School and Lecturer at UC Berkeley Law School,\u00a0speak on\u00a0<i>Criminal Justice Reform in California<\/i>.\u00a0 Marwa Cayli, the event announcer, gave guests a warm welcome.\u00a0 A\u00a0delicious dinner of authentic Turkish Cuisine was served followed by an invigorating serving of deserts and tea.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">David Onek captivated us all with his very informative presentation on\u00a0<i>Criminal Justice Reform in California<\/i>.\u00a0 It was a pleasure to hear his insight on the many facets of the subject.\u00a0 This included his experience with law reform and convict rehabilitation.\u00a0 The audience was brimming with question for him, and David Onek graciously answered them all.\u00a0 It was quite enjoyable and informative for those in attendance.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Speaker Bio:<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>David Onek is an Adjunct Professor at UC Hastings Law School and a Lecturer at UC Berkeley Law School. He previously served as a Commissioner on the San Francisco Police Commission where he set policy for the Police Department and oversaw the police discipline process. Prior to that, Onek led numerous policy initiatives as Deputy Director of the Criminal Justice Office for San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. Onek was a candidate for San Francisco District Attorney in 2011, running on a strong criminal justice reform platform and finishing second to the incumbent.<\/p>\n<p>Onek came to UC Berkeley Law School as the Founding Executive Director of the Berkeley Center for Criminal Justice (now part of the Earl Warren Institute on Law and Social Policy). There he brought law enforcement and community together to build partnerships in support of innovative, research-based, policy reforms. David Onek currently hosts the Criminal Justice Conversations Podcast, a co-production of the Berkeley Law School and the Berkeley School of Journalism, which features in-depth, thirty-minute interviews with a wide range of criminal justice leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in his career, Onek worked at the W. Haywood Burns Institute, Legal Services for Children, the National Council on Crime and Delinquency, and Walden House. He is a graduate of Stanford Law School and Brown University. Onek is the author of numerous juvenile and criminal justice book chapters, articles, and reports.
