{"id":3392,"date":"2014-11-24T10:43:38","date_gmt":"2014-11-24T18:43:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pacificasv.org\/?p=3392"},"modified":"2016-09-12T20:20:29","modified_gmt":"2016-09-13T03:20:29","slug":"ing-panel-contemporary-issues-religion-and-the-environment-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pacificainstitute.org\/bay-area\/2014\/11\/24\/ing-panel-contemporary-issues-religion-and-the-environment-2\/","title":{"rendered":"ING Panel: \u201cContemporary Issues: Religion and the Environment\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On November 5<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> Pacifica Institute Silicon Valley Branch hosted an <b>ING<\/b> Panel Discussion on Religion and the Environment.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Mediated by <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Theodore Thimpson<\/span><span class=\"s1\">, the panelists were:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s3\">*<strong>Michael Bennett<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> \u2013 Received a BA from Stanford University, MDiv from Yale Divinity School, an MPA from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a PhD from the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology. He is active in the Buddhist community as a member of its Chaplaincy Council.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s3\">*<strong>Dianne Muller<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> \u2013 Has an M.A. in Theology from the Dominican School of Philosophy, and a Certificate in Islamic Studies from the Center for Islamic Studies, both at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s3\">*<strong>Dr. Sulochina Lulla<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> \u2013 A Physician at Santa Clara Kaiser Permanente, she attended extended classes in Hindu scriptures at the Vedante society and the Chinmaya Mission, and has been a coordinator of the Gandhi Youth camp which promotes Gandhian values of peace and nonviolence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s3\">*<strong>David Marshak<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> \u2013 A retired software developer, he is active in the Jewish Community Relations Council and his synagogue.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He is also a member of the Elected council of the Interfaith Council of Contra Cota County and very active in the Princeton alumni community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s3\">*<strong>Nauman Azhar<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> \u2013 He has a MS in Computer Engineering from Santa Clara University and is Director of Internal Systems at SugarCRM.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He is an active member in the Bay Area Muslim community and an active participant in interfaith events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It was an extremely informative evening as the below series of questions were rotated through the panelists, each answering from the perspective of their specific belief.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">What is your tradition\u2019s concept of the Earth and its relationship to human life?<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">How does your tradition value non-human life?<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">How has scientific discovery challenged or changed your faith tradition?<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">What elements or beliefs in your tradition have discouraged people from taking action on environmental concerns?<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A brief Q&amp;A session followed the panelist\u2019s responses to the questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The evening concluded with an elegantly presented buffet of delicious Turkish foods and great conversation around the tables.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1'
