{"id":4617,"date":"2016-04-16T12:20:15","date_gmt":"2016-04-16T19:20:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pacificainstitute.org\/bay-area\/?p=4617"},"modified":"2016-09-12T20:20:26","modified_gmt":"2016-09-13T03:20:26","slug":"lecture-keeping-families-safe-on-internet-against-crimes-and-extremism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pacificainstitute.org\/bay-area\/2016\/04\/16\/lecture-keeping-families-safe-on-internet-against-crimes-and-extremism\/","title":{"rendered":"Lecture: Keeping Families Safe on Internet Against Crimes and Extremism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On Tuesday evening, May 10<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\">, Special Agents from Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) San Francisco Division presented a lecture on Internet Safety against Crimes and Violent Extremism at the Pacifica Institute.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The lecture has started with the definition of violent extremism which is \u201cencouraging, condoning, justifying, or supporting the commission of <\/span><span class=\"s3\"><b><i>a violent act<\/i><\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> to achieve political, ideological, religious, social or economic goals\u201d. In the lecture, the importance of distinguishing between Civil Liberties vs. Extremism was explained. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Some of the important points that are covered in this lecture are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\">Violent extremists of all kinds (Domestic or Foreign) are actively attempting to radicalize and mobilize the youth.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Their methods are mostly through internet and social media<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">online forums\/chats, <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">online games, <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">apps, <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">social networks,<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">online books\/magazines.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is hard to shield young people completely from extremist messaging by censorship since it has a limited effect.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After talking about 3 recent violent extremism in the US (one related to Sovereign Citizen Extremism, one related to religious extremism, and the other related to white supremacy extremism), the agents summarized how we can help mitigating this problem:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Educate your kids about the forms of propaganda that may pose a threat,<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Provide them with constructive outlet for discussion,<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Know and teach the difference between free speech and extremism<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Use social media as a tool for promoting positive messages.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The brochures explaining FBI\u2019s \u201cDon\u2019t Be a Puppet\u201d website (which is a free,
