{"id":1118,"date":"2016-06-15T14:23:50","date_gmt":"2016-06-15T21:23:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pacificainstitute.org\/orange-county\/?p=1118"},"modified":"2016-10-23T20:50:47","modified_gmt":"2016-10-24T03:50:47","slug":"ramadan-dinner-brought-together-orange-county-faith-communities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pacificainstitute.org\/orange-county\/2016\/06\/15\/ramadan-dinner-brought-together-orange-county-faith-communities\/","title":{"rendered":"Ramadan Brought Together Orange County Faith Communities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On June 14, 2016, Pacifica Institute Orange County branch hosted its annual Interfaith Ramadan Iftar dinner. \u00a0The event brought together religious and faith leaders as well as interfaith community members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The evening started with Naima Cassandra Arslan, the secretary of the board, reading of the Pacifica statement on the recent Orlando shooting. Following the statement, Rev. Peggy Price, the Minister Emeritus of Seal Beach Center for Spiritual Living was called up to the podium to lead a prayer in remembrance of the victims of the tragedy and also to bless the evening of people coming together to share a Ramadan meal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pacificainstitute.org\/orange-county\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/06\/Rusty-Kennedy.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-1119 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/pacificainstitute.org\/orange-county\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/06\/Rusty-Kennedy.png\" alt=\"Rusty Kennedy\" width=\"241\" height=\"347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pacificainstitute.org\/orange-county\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/06\/Rusty-Kennedy.png 329w, https:\/\/pacificainstitute.org\/orange-county\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/06\/Rusty-Kennedy-209x300.png 209w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Rusty Kennedy, the CEO of O.C. Human Relations, was the keynote speaker of the evening. He started his speech by thanking Pacifica Institute for the efforts put forth in bringing diverse communities together over Ramadan iftar dinners. He also shared his condolences to the Orlando victims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Among his inspiring words were;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHere are we again fearing for the safety of one of our community members targeted by hate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Here are we again hoping and praying this will be the last one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Here are we again to show our love and support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We are also here again gathering together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We are here to stand shoulder-to-shoulder in solidarity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We are here again embracing strangers standing next to us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We are also here again to say that we can not and will not accept that hate is stronger than love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And we will be here tomorrow too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Following Kennedy\u2019s speech, the MC, Mrs. Arslan, spoke a little about her multi-faith background and continued with basic information about Islam and some of the physical, spiritual and communal benefits of fasting during the holy month of Ramadan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As the time for breaking the fast drew closer, the guests enjoyed a video which further explained the significance of Ramadan for Muslims worldwide, ending with the Muslim call to prayer, signaling to all those fasting and not that it was finally time to eat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pacificainstitute.org\/orange-county\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/06\/OC-Interfaith-Ramadan-Dinner.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-1120 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pacificainstitute.org\/orange-county\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/06\/OC-Interfaith-Ramadan-Dinner.png\" alt=\"OC Interfaith Ramadan Dinner\" width=\"382\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pacificainstitute.org\/orange-county\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/06\/OC-Interfaith-Ramadan-Dinner.png 1000w, https:\/\/pacificainstitute.org\/orange-county\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/06\/OC-Interfaith-Ramadan-Dinner-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 382px) 100vw, 382px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Lane Calvert, the President of Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council and Don Garrick, the member of the Greater Huntington Beach Interfaith Council were gracious in sharing their closing remarks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Melik Sayin, an active member of the community, treated the guests to a demonstration of Turkish calligraphy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As the evening came to a close, guests enjoyed tea and desserts as they continued with their conversations and made arrangements to keep in touch.
