On Thursday, May, 8, 2014, a group of volunteers from the Pacifica Institute enjoyed the company of the ladies of LA Downtown Women’s Center while they also prepared the lunch service for the day.
After unloading the ingredients and getting accustomed to their work space for the day, eight volunteers rolled up their sleeves and started the race against time. The task was to cook a meal for at least 150 people in a matter of three hours.
Some chopped, some peeled, some stirred and others cleaned. What seemed like an easy task in the beginning had hearts racing towards the last minutes, as tray after tray was popped in the oven and everyone rushed to finish the task in front of them.
The coordination within the group and the helping hands of the cheerful staff combined with the encouraging comments from the hungry and curious guests of the DWC made for a successful meal in the end.
The menu for the day was; lentil soup, Turkish style Hasan Pasha burger, rice with garbazo beans and spinach salad with arugula & apple.
Judging by the enthusiasm and joy of both those who prepared the meal and those who enjoyed it, the Pacifica volunteers will be looking forward to the next opportunity to roll up their sleeves for the wonderful ladies of the DWC once again.
