“Mothers as the Architects of the Society” Photo Contest and Dinner (May 12, 2012)

This year the UCLA based student organization, Voice of Anatolia, put together an event with the help of Turkish Airlines and Pacifica Institute to celebrate, as well as, to emphasize the important role mothers play in society.

The event was titled “Mothers as the Architects of the Society” and took place on the UCLA campus, Saturday, May 12.

Featured at the event were the top 10 photo submissions which were sent in for consideration in the mother’s day photo contest.

Attendees were able to admire the photos that made it to the top ten list while they enjoyed the complimentary Anatolian cuisine prepared by volunteers of the Pacifica Institute.

Later, the grand prize winner of the photo contest, Jessica Gates, whose photo was selected by the panel of four LA-based professional photographers, was given her award – a round trip ticket to Turkey.

Several guests at the event said they were deeply touched by the pictures and thanked the organizers for all their hard work in putting together the event.

After dinner the keynote speaker, Dr. Bahar Yuksel, took the stage to discuss the vital role women play in shaping the future.

Mothers are the ones who raise and shape the new generation and nothing can outweigh the importance of this responsibility, she said.

UCLA Professor Claudia Mitchell-Kernan, department of anthropology, was also honored at the event when she was selected to receive the “Mother of The Year” title.

“Other than the accomplishment of raising a good generation, the most important thing for a mother is the success and health of her children,” she said.
